LIVE! JOPLIN MEMORIAL RUN>>> US Bank Walk of Silence

JOPLIN MEMORIAL RUN>>> US Bank Walk of Silence

• See families & friends quietly gather around flags of loved ones
• This year marks 7 years since the devastating day that changed all our lives

(64801/64804) – 161 flags line South Joplin Ave, going South to 20th Street. The Walk of Silence is in memory of the 161 people who lost their lives on May 22, 2011 in Joplin during an EF5 tornado event. #joplintornado

JOPLIN MEMORIAL RUN - WHO ARE THEY?
A portion of proceeds from each race goes back to the memorial and rebuilding efforts. The Joplin Memorial Run is proud to support tornado recovery since it’s transformation from Boomtown Run in 2011 to Joplin Memorial Run in 2012. Since 2012 we’ve donated over $250,000 to United Way, Rebuild Joplin, Bright Futures, and Bill and Virginia Leffen Center for Autism to help with tornado relief and recovery.

Stained Glass Theatre Joplin - WHO ARE THEY?
For 2018 the partner is Stained Glass Theatre. A 100% volunteer organization that produces family friendly shows for the community. SGT rented their original building from St. Johns and it sat on 26th St just east of the emergency room parking lot and helicopter pad- meaning they were in the direct line of the the tornado on May 22, 2011. Three members of the SGT family were killed and six others sustained massive injuries along with several other minor injuries. There were 56 people in the building that day and it was fortunate that the loss was not greater as there wasn’t a wall remaining. They have purchased a new building that they are remodeling since they could not rebuild at their old location. New location is at 2101 Annie Baxter. Their web site is www.sgtjoplin.com.

BEAR SIGHTINGS IN NEWTON COUNTY>>> 8 MILES S OF JOPLIN

BEAR SIGHTINGS IN NEWTON COUNTY>>> 8 MILES S OF JOPLIN

• Important info from Newton Co Sheriff
• Black Bear sightings:
1-Near Gateway Drive & Old Hwy 71
2-Near Gateway Drive & Holly Road
3-See exclusive bear prints from tipster Toni in comments!

OFFICIAL INFO FROM THE NEWTON CO SHERIFF’S OFFICE:
“Today we received multiple reports of a black bear being sighted walking through yards and near roads.

What should you do if you see a bear?

You can contact [Newton Co] dispatch at 417-451-8333 and let them know where you saw a bear. They will forward the reports to the Missouri Dept. of Conservation agent for our area.

You can also make reports online using the following link:https://nature.mdc.mo.gov/…/bear-repor…/report-bear-sighting

TIPS FOR BEAR SIGHTINGS:
🐾If you see a bear, stay away from it.

🐾 Never feed a bear, on purpose or accidentally. Feeding bears makes them lose their natural fear of humans, and teaches them to see humans as food providers. They will learn to go to places like homes, campsites, and neighborhoods to look for food, instead of staying in the forest.

🐾Don’t leave pet food sitting outside. Feed pets a portion they’ll eat at each meal and remove the empty containers.

🐾Store garbage, recyclables, and compost inside a secure building or in a bear-proof container until the day of trash pick-up.

🐾Keep grills and smokers clean and store them inside.

🐾Don’t use birdfeeders from April through November in bear country. If you must, hang them at least 10 feet high and 4 feet away from any structure.”

PLAID GIRAFFE PRESCHOOL CELEBRATES THE LAST DAY>>> BIG WHEEL DAY

PLAID GIRAFFE PRESCHOOL CELEBRATES THE LAST DAY>>> BIG WHEEL DAY

• Weather is πŸ‘ŒπŸ½ and Kona Ice is here!

(64870) — The Plaid Giraffe Preschool continues the tradition of 'Big Wheel Day' another year, “it’s something the kids just look forward to, my older son wanted to come back today and join his sister but he’s in second grade!” one Mom tells Joplin News First.

The The Plaid Giraffe Preschool has been a Joplin area staple for years and again this year they received The Joplin Globe Reader’s Choice ‘Favorite of the Four States’ Award 2018!

They have been located in the Webb City area at Mount Hope but in 2017 they expanded into South Joplin at Plaid Giraffe Preschool - Calvary. So if you are considering fall enrollment at either location?

"The staff and I work to prepare children for their next step in formal education," says Carrie Brock Cavitt aka Miss Carrie. "I also realize that children need to be children. I want them to play and investigate and think and giggle along with having the fun activities that teach them skills for kindergarten."

Joplin News First wants to emphasize this is a Preschool, not a daycare. Classes are focused on the kids and activities to spark their learning before going to Kindergarten.

Classes enrolling include:
Pre-K [4-5 year olds]
Primary [3-4 year olds]
Early Learner [2-3 year olds]

SENECA ARMED ROBBERY - SOCIAL MEDIA NABS THE SUSPECT QUICKLY

SOCIAL MEDIA CAN BE THE DEVIL>>> BUT NOT LAST NIGHT
• Seneca PD requests Joplin PD help on FB
• FB post took about 20 minutes to identify suspect
• Already in custody by morning, he was spotted at casino

(64865) — Last night at 11:45 a man entered the Big Daddy's Gas Station in Seneca armed with a knife. The suspect left with cash and fled in a vehicle.

Seneca Police Chief Altic tells Joplin News First exclusively in our video...he contacted Joplin Police Department with an image from the security cameras because of JPD’s social large social media following.

“We only have about 800 people [on our FB page] in Seneca,” he tells us. “But Joplin’s following is extensive and they are a great source to provide law enforcement information. It only took about 20 minutes and they identified where the suspect was and Ottawa County was waiting for him.”

Chief Altic mentioned that social media can sometimes be the devil because people are so negative but sometimes it can be used in the right way..."you'd be surprised what some of these criminals put up on their pages. It makes it so easy for us to identify them."

Thank you to the Joplin Police Department, Ottawa County Sheriff's Office, unnamed tribal police agencies, Seneca Police Department & Chief James Altic, Newton County Sheriff's Office, Missouri State Highway Patrol and other agencies who made this arrest possible.

Also for those watching social media and reporting to authorities what you see...you are keeping us all more safe - thank you.

• New album A MILLION LIGHTS
• Song inspired while feeding Nashville homeless under Jefferson Street Bridge

(64804) – Michael said tonight from the stage in his concert his inspiration for writing this song "Love Always Wins" - while feeding homeless in Nashville. He told LIFEWAY christian stores in a printed interview online:

[RE: When writing the new album,] “I remember dry periods of just no creativity and then all of a sudden something shifts. You have an experience or you’ll feed the homeless down under the Jefferson Street Bridge in Nashville, or you have some encounter that was life changing at church or something.

And then all of a sudden you come in two, three days later and you write this amazing melody that sounds fresh. … And then you realize that you panicked for no reason, and I’m here, it comes to creative juices are flowing.”

Michael W. Smith has a new album just released, A MILLION LIGHTS, and he's currently touring supporting that album all across the country and Joplin one of the places he definitely wanted to stop!

"Every year something amazing comes out of this, every year there is one of those moments at the end of the day when you just say - wow...that was amazing," - Melissa Annis, Realtor, The Tim Goostree Team of KW
The entire Keller Williams team will be cooking the lunches at The Light at Joplin, Thursday, May 10.
If you order more than 5 lunches they will deliver to your office. Joplin, Carthage, Webb City and even Pittsburg! But you have to order by 5:00 pm Tuesday.
NOTE FROM KW: RED DAY (Renew, Energize and Donate) is an initiative dedicated to celebrating Keller Williams Realty’s year-round commitments to improving our local communities. Each year, on the second Thursday in May, tens of thousands associates from across the United participate, devoting their time to renewing and energizing aspects of the neighborhoods in which they serve.

(64801/64804) — The FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) monitors all air traffic. When a plane or helicopter enters air space most usually they must file a flight plan (within certain parameters of their flight). You can have access to that information.

This app is amazing. It’s FREE and you can look in the sky, see a plane or helicopter and get all the information you want!  This doesn’t work with military aircraft or flights for military practices.
